On starting things

reflectionbeginningsadhd

There is a particular feeling that lives just before you begin something.

It is not quite fear. It is not quite excitement. It is something that sits between them and pretends to be neither. For a long time I thought this feeling meant I wasn’t ready. I’ve started to think it means the opposite.

The waiting room

Most things I’ve ever done that mattered were preceded by a long period in this waiting room. A document open on screen, cursor blinking. A notebook open to a blank page. A conversation I kept rehearsing and never having.

The waiting room is comfortable in a dangerous way. Nothing can go wrong there. You are still the person who might do the thing. That is a very safe place to live.

What actually moves you

I have not found a trick that bypasses the waiting room entirely. But I’ve noticed what actually gets me out of it: a very small first action with zero stakes.

Not “write the essay.” Open the file and write one sentence, even a bad one. Not “build the site.” Create the folder and name it. Not “have the conversation.” Send one message.

The smallness is not a weakness in the plan. The smallness is the plan.

Why this matters here

Quest Grove exists because I kept waiting to have something worth saying before I started saying it. This first note is proof that I’ve decided to stop waiting. It’s not finished. Neither am I.
